"The people bring down the regime"

The world has been watching Egypt. Watching the stand off between the people, and a demi-god not used to seeing anything but his iron will realized. Between a fledgling desire for empowerment, and an army that could have at any time extinguished that flame.

The consequences of the victories of the peoples of Tunisia and Egypt will have continued repercussions across the region. If Mubarak could be forced out, a man of iron, a man who used every trick of repression, then who is safe?  Even should there be no other revolutions in the region, no more will its leaders be able to discard dismissively the needs of their peoples. They are going to have to listen. They are going to have to deliver.

This is a region with a huge blessing, and a huge burden – young people. The demographics of the region is one where the majority of the population in most Arab countries is below the age of 25. This group can drive the economy forward. But if they are not actively employed, if they do not have a stake in their nation, can drag their countries down with them.

Countries across the region need to embrace economic freedom, and loosen their grip on social controls. They have to allow their people to help themselves, to be the seeds of their own rebirth.

Today the world looks at Egypt in a new light. After decades slumbering in the shadows, it again is in the limelight, only this time it is not just shining a light for the Arab world, but for the world as a whole. Today we all want to be Egyptian. Today we are all proud of what the human spirit is capable of. Of what with courage it can achieve.

Welcome to a very new day.
