Comment on The Rise of the Arabs, the Fall of Colonialism by Simone
Honestly, I get a little bored by hearing that everything is the West’s fault. My god guys, your future belongs to you, and always has. It’s your problem if it took you decades to assert yourself.
I also find it deeply irritating that on the one hand you ask the West to step in in Kuwait and now Libya, and yet punish and see conspiracy when you do manage to convince them. Damned if they do, damned if they don’t.
Please, liberation comes from within, and that means allowing yourself to be liberated from the past. Today is your world. Stop whining and sieze it.
Comment on Saudi Student’s Arrest Will Have Unplanned Repercussions in the U.S. by Simone
A really good point… Living in the UK when the IRA used to plan terrorist campaigns across the country, everyone was very aware not to allow those campaigns to affect our thinking, how we lived our lives, or how our relations with others.
I remember very clearly for example, we never saw the problems as anything to do with Irish people. We always saw them as something to do with a small, misguided group of extremists. Of course, it helped we have always had huge populations of Irish people in the UK. Most of us have Irish blood somewhere!
Still it was always something that was clearly understood – don’t inflate what the IRA were doing with normal Irish people. That is something that the U.S. – and the rest of the world – should take on board with extremists from the likes of Saudi…

Ken, the day we have journalists and news organisations that put safety before getting reporters on the ground, is the day we are all screwed. Yes, be calculated in risks, but the world would never have known what happened in Tahrir square, or anywhere…

Comment on Regarding Lara Logan: Don’t Let it Stain Tahrir by Simone
@ Ara8, you are right. Of course, there is no justification for what happened to Lara, it is shameful, and the people who perpetrated the weak, cowardly act were part of the Tahrir celebrations. There is no getting away from the fact.
However, we need to try to see the two in separation. The good in the world that came from the people of Tahrir is not in any way lessened by the shameful act of what happened to Lara. I think that is what Zeinobia is saying. I think she may feel a little defensive because she is so proud about what was achieved – of which she is part. And she does not want the fire of that to go out because of something not related to it.
My heart goes to Lara. I hope they find the people who did it. Truly, shame on them.
