And in no region should people be celebrating good teaching more than in the Middle East. Trouble is, you will find much divergence of opinion as to what good teaching is! So celebrate outcomes as well as excellence!

All of my teachers are likely to be dead, but I was much inspired by John Griffin, who taught me Latin and Greek. I subsequently discovered that he was one of the cryptologists at Bletchley Park who did so much to bring the Second World War to an end.

The outcome: a love of the classics and of the ancient world that has stayed with me ever after.
